The annual Washie 100 mile running event takes place today, starting at the Halyards Hotel in Port Alfred. Runners make their way through Port Alfred to make up a few kilometres, before heading out along the R72 to East London.
Buffalo Road Runners in East London is the host club, with the race finishing at the Buffs Club, 160km later.
Emergency services within the Port Alfred Cluster will monitor the Washie with officials on duty along the route.
“In order to ensure the safety of these athletes, the SAPS will be monitoring the event, said police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender.
Motorists using the R72 between Port Alfred and East London from 5pm Friday 7 July and 8pm Saturday 8 July to drive with caution.
Govender said certain areas of the R72 will be a stop/goes for vehicle traffic. “The SAPS will have two check points to allow and ease traffic flow”.
“Motorists are urged to exercise patience and caution on the R72. Delays of between 30-40 minutes are expected”.
Alternative routes to consider are:
R342 via Salem to Grahamstown, N2 to East London
R67 Bathurst via Grahamstown,N2 to East London.
