Sirenskyscraper Dance Studio and Amaphiko Township Dance Project recently held a fund-raising performance for their dancer Thembani Buka at St George’s Hall.
Buka has been accepted into an 11-month internship at the Vuyani Dance Theatre in Johannesburg.
Dance teacher Hermien Potgieter said, “As sad as the Grahamstown community will be to lose Thembani, we are so excited for him to be part of this phenomenal training programme and get the chance to work with incredible teachers, choreographers and dancers.
“The Vuyani Dance Theatre programme will allow Thembani the opportunity to continue his training as a dancer.”
The programme covers all Buka’s tuition and training fees but to ensure that he is able to make the most of this experience he will need assistance with living expenses and for this reason they appealed to the Grahamstown community to meet Thembani, see him dance and make a donation to his future.
Buka has been an active member of the dance community in Grahamstown for the past few years.
As a senior dancer at the Amaphiko Township Dance Project, he had the opportunity to perform widely, complete in his AIDT Modern dance exams and graduate to teach the younger dancers.
He is also active in his church, assists learners at the Good Shepherd Primary School and teaches and choreographs for the Sakhuluntu Cultural Group.
