An 18-year-old female black rhino was found with a shot wound in the ribs by workers in a Game farm near Grahamstown yesterday.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said workers in the farm were patrolling at around 8.40am when they noticed two rhinos, the older one lying down and a calf standing next to it.
"On closer inspection it was discovered that the one on the ground had been shot in the ribs and had died.
"She was an 18-year-old female black rhino."
A case under the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act has been opened.
"The charge is hunting an endangered specie on private property without a permit or consent," said Govender.
She said the rhino was not dehorned. No arrests have been made yet by the police.
