Artists, soccer clubs and designers around the Eastern Cape have been given equipment by the Department of Sport, Recreation and Arts and Culture (DSRAC)
The department hosted an official handover of Legacy Projects Equipment at the Dakawa Arts Centre.
The department handed over equipment to artists, soccer clubs and designers in various municipalities around the region.
This equipment included sewing equipment, DJ sets, football kit and music equipment, all to the value of
R360 000.
The Bathurst Sakhuluntu Music and Dance Group, who were also beneficiaries, opened the gathering with a beautiful performance and also serenaded the audience throughout.
DSRAC member of the executive committee, Pemmy Majodina, said it is very symbolic to give away this equipment during Heritage Month because the role that each of the recipients plays in the community is linked to our heritage and is also a part of it.
She briefly explained the impact and importance that each of the roles that the recipients have in our community at large.
“The sketch that we just watched here is a depiction of how old people don’t really understand or accept gay people in their homes but the Constitution is very clear in terms of discrimination based on sexual orientation,” she said.
“In terms of our heritage, we have a very strong background in soccer, music and the clothes we wear,” she said.
She also stressed how important it was to have such people in our lives and the impact that young people have in our communities.
“We all know that leaving the house naked is inappropriate, hence we need designers to clothe us, even the African traditional attire we wear, designers have a way of making them stylish and trendy so we need them in our society,” she added.
She also commended the recipients for their talents and encouraged them to never give up on their dreams, to always keep their talent alive and make us think as a society.
The recipients were in turn overwhelmed with gratitude and thanked DSRAC for recognising and investing in their dreams.
