Integrated Waste and Recycling Services (IWARS) is due to begin operating the waste buy-back centres on this week. The portable units, which have the appearance and dimensions of a shipping container, were delivered to an area adjacent to Makana’s Kop old age home in Joza, Sugarloaf Hill and the Carlisle Street dump.
In a public meeting last week, project manager Mark Price explained that the aim was to reduce waste destined for landfills by adding value to it.
Grocott’s Mail was at the Carlisle Street site when the unit was offloaded, and supervisor Kevin Lee gave Grocott’s Mail a tour.
The unit has solar powered lights and IT for recording suppliers and sales is in the pipeline. It has an office area with a toilet and basin and a suppliers’ area where material is weighed.
IWARS employee Kevin Lee, who supervised the offloading, said the centres would be open from Monday 22 February, 9am to 5pm.
