Intervarsity: Rhodes lays down the law

Students have been instructed to carry their student cards with them at all times at this weekend's Intervarsity. This is one of the stringent rules Rhodes University has introduced to try and prevent incidents of the kind that have marred previous editions.

Saying students must take full responsibility for their behaviour and their conduct during the event, hosted this year by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, Dean of Students Dr Vivian de Klerk has released a list of rules for Intervarsity 2013.

One specifically addresses the traditional white overalls that Rhodes students wear to these events.

In the past the words and images that have appeared on some overalls have caused controversy. Because Rhodes condemns any activity that brings the University into disrepute, the Dean of Students has said overalls may not contain offensive or obscene writing or graphic imagery.

Local businesses might be interested to know that the University has banned all profit-making large social events held in Grahamstown during the Intervarsity weekend.

Students who are concerned about their safety can rest assured that a team of professionally trained security personnel and a group of volunteer marshals will be present for the entire weekend, De Klerk said.

The rules also state that sporting matches will be stopped in the event of anti-social behaviour.

The Dean of Students has warned that if any of these rules are contravened during Intervarsity 2013, Rhodes will no longer be allowed to participate in future editions of the annual event.
