In a season awards ceremony followed by an annual general meeting the Swallows rugby club lauded its best performers and elected the next year's committee last weekend. Held at the Oval sports ground clubhouse on Saturday afternoon, players, supporters, officials and sponsors came to see the awards handed out.

The prestigious title of Sportsman of the Year went to flank forward and live-wire Marquin Hendriks for his consistent performance and dedication. A former wing and full-back, Hendriks possesses the skill, pace and great defence tactics that have made him stand out as a top player. He also scored a few brilliant tries during the season.
Other award winners were Ettienne Matroos (Junior Sportsman of the Year), Dillon Hopshire (Senior Backline Player of the Year), Ben Ruiters (Senior Forward Player of the Year), Chris Maarman and Odayi Plaaitjies (Most Disciplined Players), Lethario Arries (Most Dedicated Player), Nigel Welcome (Most Tries Scored) and Devante Sias (Golden Boot Award – Most Points Scored).
At the AGM later in the day, Swallows elected their new executive committee, inviting a number of new faces onto the board. This year's vice-president, Denzil Bouwer, stepped down from his role due to personal reasons but said he will remain a member of the club. Terwin De Vos was elected new chairman.
Other office bearers are: Andre Williams (vice-chairman), David Breda (treasurer), Phillip Oerson (general secretary), Roy Francis and Phillip Oerson (coaching), Francois Mentoor and Barend Mentoor (team managers).
The club is already immersed in training for the upcoming season and practises at the Lavender Valley field from Mondays to Thursdays from 6pm. All players and prospective players are urged to attend the daily practises.
In the last season Swallows won the losers' section of the Mayoral Cup in April and performed well with a young and exciting group of players against top opposition in the Eastern Province Wellman Harmse competition.
The Swallows rugby team, established in 1994, is part of the Swallows Amateur Sports Club.
