Returning from the prestigious Cup of Tigers held in Uitenhage last Friday and Saturday, Grahamstown karateka performed and ki-yaaed their way to earning seven gold medals.
Returning from the prestigious Cup of Tigers held in Uitenhage last Friday and Saturday, Grahamstown karateka performed and ki-yaaed their way to earning seven gold medals.
Also known as the South African Federation of Shotokan Karate National Championships, the event saw members of the Rhodes University Shotokan Karate Club and the Joza Karate Club rake in the medals.
Rhodes karateka took the various U20 and 21-35 age categories by storm, achieving a total of 13 top three placings.
Brittany Denton was the top performer, winning a total of four gold medals in the women's U20 and 21-35 brown and black belt kata (forms) and kumite (fighting) categories. She was also the recipient of two floating trophies, which are annually presented to the winners of the senior women's brown and black belt kata and kumite categories.
Joza club instructor Mzwandile Matebese claimed the silver medal in the veteran men's brown and black belt kumite category.
