On 20 July, Grocott’s Mail reported on the addition of two fire engines to the Makana municipality fire department fleet, increasing the number to 12.
As of last Friday, almost a month after they were delivered, the trucks are yet to be registered. A firefighter in the department told Grocott’s Mail that the two Hino single-cab, 4×4, 7961cc, six-cylinder fire engines have been parked since they arrived.
Fire service manager William Welkom, however, said the vehicles could be used in case of emergency. “They have temporary licences and although they are not fully licensed, they are not out of commission. We can use them in case of an emergency,” said Welkom .
The fire department received one of the fire engines from the Cacadu District Municipality. Makana bought itself another one, which arrived at the same time. The municipality assured Grocott’s Mail that the vehicles would be registered by yesterday.
