Makana Municipality's director of corporate services, Thabiso Klaas, who faces charges of drunk driving, has been delayed yet again in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court.
On Monday, Klaas briefly appeared in court just to hear that the case has been postponed until next month to allow the new public prosecutor time to get transcripts of the previous court proceedings. This is because the previous prosecutor was transferred to another court.
Klaas was arrested after being stopped at a roadblock in Albany Road in July 2009 and it was suspected that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. A witness on the scene, Warrant Officer Timothy Stockton, based in East London, testified that he had pulled over the black VW Jetta that Klaas was driving.
He said that Klaas had been unable to produce a driver's license and that his breath smelled of liquor. Stockton arrested Klaas on suspicion of drunk driving and took him to the Grahamstown police station, where he was detained. Magistrate Nomnikelo Jebese postponed the case until 23 April to allow the state time to get the transcripts.
