The annual Rhodes University societies extravaganza was cancelled at the 11th hour last Friday night, leaving first-year students clueless about what activities and societies the institution has to offer.
Jennifer Snook, a committee member of the Young Royals Society, said the organisation of the event had been haphazard from the start. “The sign-up forms for the extravaganza stated it would be held on Saturday evening, then at the last minute we were told it was moved to Friday,” she said.
The purpose of the event is for first year students to window-shop the university's societies before committing and paying a sign-up fee, which is normally done at a societies sign-up evening held soon afterwards.
All the societies were set up and ready on Friday night when an Student Representative Council (SRC) representative came around at the last minute and asked everyone if they’d rather cancel due to the rain.
“We all said yes because we were so caught off guard by the change in day in the first place,” Snook said.
Another suggested reason for the poor co-ordination of the event was the recent resignation of the SRC societies councillor, Lihle Ngcobozi. An alternative date for the extravaganza is yet to be announced.
