The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has issued an ultimatum to the Department of Education regarding the post provision and termination of temporary teachers' posts.
Sadtu provincial deputy secretary Nolitha Mboniswa said, "we are engaging with all the relevant stakeholders. We are still waiting for response from the Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula, whom we met two weeks ago on the issue of temporary teachers."
She described it as a "crisis" that temporary teachers in the province have not been paid, and said that Sadtu has also met with Premier Noxolo Kiviet and ANC members in the province to discuss the issue with them.
"We have given them time until the end of the January to resolve the issue and get back to us… so until then there won't be a march or strike."
