Owners of the Albany Driving School, Roy Grobler and Fish Everton, have extended their business, opening the A-grade Grahamstown Private Test Station.
Grobler and Everton previously worked at the municipal roadworthy testing centre and together have more than 20 years of experience. The test station offers roadworthy tests for motorcycles, cars, buses and trucks in their first-class testing station.
Once a car is on the floor, special equipment tests the headlight focus. The vehicle ID/chassis number, seat belts and other internal checks are done. The exterior check includes the wheel nuts rust. In the pit wheel alignment and front and back brakes are checked.
Further down the 19-metre pit, the vehicle is put on to the suspension tester (play detector) to check the CV joints and steering. In a road test, aspects such as brakes and steering are checked again. Minor defects disqualifying a vehicle from roadworthy status can be fixed on the premises.
The private roadworthy centre is next to the Albany Driving School's practice yard, opposite the Department of Public works in Reynolds Road, in the Industrial Area.
