Towards the end of December the soil on the greens was loosened up and levelled. Now the green keepers are being kept busy mowing the greens for various competitions. The first event of the year was the Eastern Areas men's event last week. This week will be the mixed pairs competition.
Then it's time for one of the major sporting events in Grahamstown, the Pepper Grove Pick n Pay Inter Company Night Bowls League, which will be hosted by the Grahamstown Bowling Club for the 17th successive year.
There are serious teams out to kill, but there's also a fun section and clubs, businesses, organisations and even families are urged to form teams to take part in this year's night bowls. The event traditionally boasts a great atmosphere and many prizes.
The night bowls starts on Monday 31 January and teams should enter before the cut-off date of Monday 17 January. Competition organiser June McDougall said there were still a number of spaces available, but entries were coming in every day, and once 84 teams were registered, entries would close.
