Boma was briefing Grocott's Mail shortly after his election at the ANC branch's Annual General Meeting at Noluthando Hall on Tuesday night. Boma acknowledged that there were challenges facing the community.
“We are still faced with the shortage of water, and unemployment, which results in a number of social ills such as drug abuse,” he said. On an organisational level, he outlined four critical issues that his executive would look at.
“We want to ensure there are ANC members all over the ward, to unite the ANC where it's divided, strengthen the ANC where it is weak and win the confidence of our people,” he said.
Boma was confident the branch would contribute to the national target of 1 million members when the ANC celebrated its centenary next year. He said the branch would be actively involved in a number of activities, such as making the schools function better, and working in synergy with the South African Police Force against crime.
“We will be building from the foundation that our predecessors have laid for us,” he explained. Boma was elected unopposed, and so was his deputy, Ndumiso Madinda. Nomathamsanqa Meti was elected secretary after she won by 69 votes, leaving behind Nosipho Kulati, who received 58 votes.
Kulati was instead elected deputy secretary, having been neck and neck with Mthuthuzeli Matyumza. Kulati received 63 votes; Matyumza 53. Matyumza was elected treasurer, after receiving 86 votes, leaving behind Bongani Hanise, who received 35.
Ten additional members were also elected, including Nomhle Gaga, Ntombizanele Malgas, Siphokazi Matyumza, Sakhiwo Duruwe, Bongani Hanise, Siyabulela Baliso and Manisi Bangiso. Four candidates to stand for the position of the ward's councillor were also nominated: Nomathamsanqa Meti (52 votes); Roda Mahlakahlaka (43); Rami Xhonxa (17) and Patrick Mahlahla (6).
Regional Executive Committee member, Scara Njadayi, said the names would be taken to the Regional Executive Committee for screening. “We will come back and convene a meeting where the candidates will be introduced to the community. We will ask them questions, and allow community members to ask them questions as well,” explained Njadayi.
He said nominations would also be made for the Regional Deployment Committee. The six nominations for Proportional Representative Councillors were Mabhuti Matyumza, Nomhle Gaga, Ndumiso Madinda, Nomakhwezi Madikwa, Vumile Lwana and Zamuxolo Peter.
