The matric class of 2011 have been urged to apply for their IDs well ahead of their final examinations at the end of the year, to avoid the last-minute rush.
“Part of your preparation for your final examinations is ensuring you are in possession of a green bar-coded identity document," said Home Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, on Tuesday. "I urge you to apply for your IDs as soon as possible, at your closest Home Affairs office, should you not have one already,” Dlamini-Zuma said, explaining that anyone who turned 16 in 2011 was eligible to apply for their identity document.
“Officials in the department are working as hard as possible to ensure applications are processed expeditiously. We will also be visiting schools to help pupils who are 16 years and above complete applications for their IDs,” said Dlamini Zuma. Having an identity document held the key to one’s future, Dlamini-Zuma said. “It is required when you write your examinations, apply for further study or enter the job market. It is also essential when opening a bank account, applying for loans or acquiring assets.”
