Christmas came early for the children of Home of Joy foster care home in Joza, as members of Grahamstown's Nigerian community donated armloads of groceries and clothing last Saturday.
And when many might have spent the day eating and drinking as much as possible, this ex-pat community's end-of-year party was instead a day to share with the home's orphans and abandoned children.
Steve Arowolo, from the Nigerian community in Grahamstown, said of the event: "It is a way of saying we appreciate the good people of South Africa and Grahamstown in general. In our own little way of giving back to the community in the spirit of Christmas. We do sincerely hope that this gesture will impact the lives of these young ones positively".
In an emotional speech the home's manager, Margaret Ngcangca, thanked the group for the donation and said if it were not for such gifts, her work would be more difficult.
