During the past month, auditions for South African Idols have been televised throughout the nation, and now the homegrown version, Founders Idols is back again at the Rhodes Barratt Lecture Theatre.
During the past month, auditions for South African Idols have been televised throughout the nation, and now the homegrown version, Founders Idols is back again at the Rhodes Barratt Lecture Theatre.
Founders Hall, a Rhodes University dining hall, will once again be hosting the event as part of the Dean of
Students (DoS) Alcohol Free Challenge and as a fundraiser for their hall ball later this year.
Derek Sanhokwe, contestant coordinator said, “It was such a success last year that we decided on continuing the competition this year and hopefully it becomes a Rhodes University tradition.”
As part of the competition, the Founders Idols committee will be giving away a grand prize of R750, a second prize of R500 and a third prize of R250.
Sanhokwe mentioned that there will be prizes for everyone, including all the contestants that participated as well as members of the audience.
Sanhokwe said the judging panel will consist of a representative from the Dean of Students office as a judge and they are hoping to get Gugulethu Mhlungu, the manager of Rhodes Music Radio (RMR) as a second judge.
The show will not be televised but will be hosted by Nontobeko Sibisi, a fourth year Rhodes Journalism and Media Studies student, at the Barratt Lecture Theatre on Saturday, 11 September from 7pm to 9pm.
This year’s competition will not have auditions as all contestants who enter will automatically be accepted into the competition.
The competition will consist of two rounds. The preliminary round will involve all the contestants singing a song of their choice to an instrumental backtrack.
The judges will then deliberate and a top five will be picked. The top five will then go through another round where they will sing a different song for the judges.
From this a top three will be picked, and finally a winner will be named. Application forms are available from the Founders Hall Secretary or email Derek Sanhokwe at g07s0378@campus.ru.ac.za.
