Three men from out of town were apprehended by Hi-Tec Security on Friday night while attempting to break in to Androniki’s Manufacturing Jeweller at Pepper Grove Mall.
The men had cut through the corrugated iron in the roof of the shop, triggering the alarm. Hi-Tec was on the scene before they entered the store and the police were alerted.
Two of the men appeared in court on Monday. One man was shot in the buttocks and was taken to a hospital in Port Elizabeth, said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.
He appeared in court on Thursday. “These guys were very serious,” said Derek Richardson, armed response manager of Hi-Tec.
“The one guy was very aggressive. He tried to stab one of my responding officers and we had to shoot him,” said Richardson.
The case will be heard again on 23 October. This is the second time the security company has responded to an alarm going off at Androniki’s.
“People from out of town think Hi-Tec is sleeping, they are not,” said store owner Androniki Stergiou. “We are very proud of Hi-Tec.”
