Kingswood College have one more dress rehearsal for K-Day when they play against Graeme College at Somerset Field on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides go into the game on the back of contrasting wins, where Kingswood won against Winterberg 42-12, while Graeme weren’t convincing, but were clinical in their 34-7 win over Mary Waters.
It will take an excellent performance from Graeme to beat the consistent game Kingswood has been playing. Graeme has played well against smaller schools but have been found wanting against the bigger schools, with the results showing. While both sides have been in the shadow of St Andrew’s College this season, the game will serve up some interesting contests.
Game play
Graeme have had some good results under their belt after some big early season reverses at the hands of Grey High, St Andrew’s and Selborne College. They will have to front up in the physical stakes if they have any chance of the spoils, which is where the experienced front row of Chad Banfield, Tyrone Rankin and Jade Bowles is key.
Kingswood forwards looked solid on defence and on the scrums, but the centre pairing of Chris Keets and John Hale is bound to keep the College defence honest with their hard running and incisiveness.
The breakdown contest is more or less where games are decided and however bosses the rucks and keeps the ball in hand the most, will certainly be all smiles at the end of the game.
Coach’s cue
Graeme first team coach Brendan Grant expects a hard game from Kingswood, but will treat the game like any other.
“We will work hard to on defence to and we will try to keep the ball in hand,” he said.
Kingswood coach Graham Carlson said that they will not deviate from their usual approach, but will keep an eye on the weather as it might influence proceedings.
