UBOM! Eastern Cape Drama Company made its fans proud this week. The company recently won a prestigious award at the Cape Town Out-of-the-Box festival hosted by Unima SA.
UBOM! Eastern Cape Drama Company made its fans proud this week. The company recently won a prestigious award at the Cape Town Out-of-the-Box festival hosted by Unima SA.
Ubom! presented The Adventures Of A Little Nobody, directed by Brink Scholtz at the festival. This intriguing show for children traces Little Nobody, who goes on the road to self discovery and along the way meets weird and wonderful
creatures who help her learn some valuable life lessons. In the end she gains self-esteem and learns that people need to believe in themselves.
Ubom! incorporated some hand puppetry into their piece so that it could be relevant to the out of the box theme of the festival which is dedicated to puppetry and visual performance.
They were nominated in three categories in the handspring puppet company awards for best design, best manipulator and best production.
Actress Ilana Celliers, who controlled Little Nobody, won the best manipulator award. “The quality and energy of your performance, the poignancy and importance of the message, and the inventiveness and sheer theatricality of the piece won over its audience and moved and inspired all who saw it,” said Yvette Hardie, the festival curator.
This does not come as a shock considering that Ubom’s artistic director Janet Buckland is the winner of 2008 Shoprite/Checkers Woman of the Year award.
Ubom! will be touring the Eastern Cape to different schools tackling issues around inequality and inferiority complexes in their performances.
They also performed at Scifest Africa on Tuesday. Sarah Roberson, the company’s project manager says it is special to finally be recognised for our artistic work rather than just the outreach initiatives.
Ubom! is a non-profit organisation which aims at stimulating and sustaining an arts industry in the Eastern Cape.
