The South African Triathlon Championships took place in Germiston in Johannesburg recently, with two local athletes Terri-Lynn Penney and Matthew Archer forming part of the Eastern Province team.
The seniors and age groupers competed in an Olympic distance which was a 1.5km swim followed by a 40km cycle and a 10km run.
Archer was part of the junior 16-19 event, which was over a 750m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run.
As the lake temperature was over 22°C the swim could take place without athletes having to wear wetsuits.
Many athletes seemed to struggle through the swim as they are accustomed to wearing a wetsuit. Archer finished 40th overall in the 16-19 event and 21st in the 16-17 age group.
His swimming time was 12 minutes 29 seconds, he completed the 20km cycle in 37:11 and ran 20:10 for the 5km run, for a total time of 1:09:50.
Penney completed the Olympic distance event in 2:40:35, finishing fourth in the 30-34 age group. Her swim time was 37:03, and her cycle time was 1:20:44 she then made up valuable minutes on the run, completing the 10km in 42:48.
Penney is now waiting to see if she has been included in the South African team to take part in the World triathlon championships in September this year.
