The Makana Local Football Association Eastern Soccer Tournament will once again be held in Grahamstown. The tournament will be sponsored by Albany Sports.
Co-ordinator of the tournament, Chris Totobela, who is vice president of the LFA, said the LFA held an Easter soccer tournament many years ago and it was their plan to bring back the tournament and the vibe around soccer.
Totobela encouraged local soccer fans to enjoy the tournament as well as support their sides. The tournament will start on Friday morning and runs until Monday 5 April.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday’s matches will be in a round robin format and will start at 10am and will continue until about 5pm.
The teams will be split into groups of four, with the top two teams in each group going to the next round. The quarter finals, semis and finals will take place on Monday, with the finals scheduled for 6pm.
Totobela said that while 14 teams had entered for the tournament, they were hoping for at least 16 teams, with registration closing last night.
He said that while many teams took part in various Easter tournament over the past few year’s, the LFA decided to cater for the local soccer sides and organise their own tournament.
The tournament winners will walk away with R3000, a full soccer kit as well as gold medals. The runners up will receive R1500 and silver medals. The third placed team will receive R1000 and a soccer ball.
There will also be prizes for the goalkeeper of the tournament, player of the tournament, leading goal scorer of the tournament as well as a prize for the biggest fan. Totobela said they wanted soccer players and soccer fans to “come and have fun.”
