The annual Kingswood College Junior School Hockey Festival held last weekend was “brilliant and one of the better events of this festival,” according to the festival’s co-ordinator, Ian Knott-Craig.
This is the 12th year the festival has been running and it is held to mark the beginning of the hockey season.
Knott-Craig said 19 teams representing ten schools participated in the festival, 204 learners played matches, there were 42 coaches and managers and a total of 339 goals were scored.
Both local and external schools took part in the festival with schools coming from as far as George, as well as Port Elizabeth.
Spectators peppered the stands and sidelines of the matches and the players kept their spirits high by singing war-cries while they were warming up.
Knott-Craig was impressed with the large numbers of guardians, parents and friends that that turned out to support the players.
He said that although the festival was challenging and an intese two days of hockey, it was a fun event. He commended the players on their team work and he was thoroughly pleased with the festival, describing it as “fantastic”.
“The hockey festival is a good way of bringing in the new hockey season for boys and girls, and the focus is on players having fun on the field and making friends off the field.
It was evident that some of the players were rusty but during the day their skills emerged andsome outstanding hockey was played,” said Knott- Craig.
Schools that participated in the festival were Kingswood, Victoria Primary and DSG from Grahamstown, Glenwood House and Holy Cross Convent from George, Woodridge College, Grey, Priory and Claredon from Port Elizabeth.
