The Oppidan Committee is really impressed with the Oppidan Digs Olympics that was held recently. There were 28 teams with four students in each team.
The teams mainly consisted of oppidan students although some residence students also participated. This is the third time this annual challenge has been held.
The digs olympics organiser and oppidan sub-warden,Jacyn Mitchley said, “I came up with the idea three yearsago at our team-building camp after hearing how some digs students held informal olympics which consisted of cricket and rugby among other sports, I proposed to my committee that it would be quite fun to hold a similar event but on a larger scale with wackier events.”
The games held at these olympics are certainly different, with the programme including a gladiator course that was brought in from Port Elizabeth, paintball, trolley races using borrowed Pick n Pay trolleys, archery and building large puzzles that were designed and made by the oppidan committee and Rhodes Drama Department last year.
“From the feedback that we have gathered, we have found that the teams really enjoyed the challenges as well as all the prizes that were up for grabs,” Mitchley said.
This is because the prizes were necessary equipment that students who are living in their own unfurnished houses need.
“Some students really start off with nothing when they move into digs, so it was fun to watch some teams’ excitement when they won tupperware, toilet sprays, glasses and cooking implements,” Mitchely added.
The overall winning team was VW with a score of 107 points. “The festivity was amazing, we had teams dressed up in the weirdest gear, shouting war cries, doing cheerleading pyramids and leading around their pets as mascots,” Mitchley said.
The Spirit Award went to the team, The Studio. “They were constantly dancing, forming pyramids, doing aerobics and generally entertaining us all,” Mitchley said.
The Oppi Committee are grateful for the high-spirited participation at the event and thank participants for making it a memorable afternoon.
