According to Major Eltin Gysman from the Grahamstown military base, the loud bangs were made by the Mthatha 14th South African Infantry Battalion which has been practising at the Grahamstown base (6SAI battalion) for the past three weeks.
The training was finalised yesterday. “The 14 SAI battalion of Mthatha was using our military base in preparation for deployment in the DRC next month,” said Gysman.
He could not say how many soldiers were involved. Gysman said Grahamstown residents have nothing worry about.
He added that the base will conduct other practising sessions before the Soccer World Cup, however, he assured Grocott’s Mail that there won’t be anymore loud noises involved.
