“Our focus is to make the league look professional and attractive and to achieve this we need to make sure that pupils within the required age limit play in the league,” said Mandla Gagayi, assistant manager at Rhodes university Sports Administration and organiser of the league.
Both the opening matches produced many goals. Nombulelo thrashed the defending champions 5-0 with Lelethu Makile scoring four goals and Sandiso Diko scoring his side’s last goal of the match.
Mary Waters ran riot over Ntsika scoring a total of six goals to the two by Ntsika. Mawas’ goals were scored by Siyabonga Lwisani (hattrick), Lwando Dlengezele, Malibongwe Dlelapantsi and Athenkosi Mantolo.
Ntsika’s goals were scored by Athi Simayile and Masixole Noxako. In Wednesday’s matches, Nombulelo and Mary Waters played to a one-all draw, while Khutliso Daniels and TEM Mrwetyana drew 0-0.
The league was established in 2006 and is now in its fourth year, and though established by Rhodes Sport, it has grown and became a joint project with Rhodes, the Department of Education and the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
Mary Waters, TEM Mrwetyana, Nombulelo, Khutliso Daniels and Ntsika are playing in the 2010 season. Nathaniel Nyaluza is no longer in the league as their coach left Grahamstown and there was no other teacher to coach soccer.
The Benjamin Mahlasela soccer coach informed the organisers that the team will not be playing in the league.
