Grahamstown’s own cycle tour, the Makana Brick Grocott’s cycle race, has seen a move in dates. Held in May over the past few years, the race will take place in September this year.
According to one of the organisers, Devin Cripwell of the Rhodes University Cycling Club it was decided to try find an alternative date after the poor weather of recent years.
The organisers looked at either earlier in the year or later in the year, when better weather could be expected.
Cripwell said Eastern Province Cycling raised some concerns “about the future of our race given it was so close to SA champs, and many cyclists wouldn’t attend for fear of injury”.
It was then decided to move the race to later in the year, given the fact that the early part of the year is congested with races both in the Eastern Cape and other popular events across the country.
The new date for the Makana Brick Grocotts cycle race is Sunday 19 September. Makana Brick is once again the title sponsor, while Grocott’s Mail are the media sponsors. Rhodes Cycling club will host the event and will organise the event together with Grahamstown Round Table.
