The St Andrew’s College and DSG rowing teams enjoyed a successful weekend in East London, where they took part in a three day event comprising two regattas, the Selborne Sprints over a course of 500m, and
the Buffalo Regatta, which is raced over standard distances of 1 000m and 2 000m for juniors and seniors respectively.

All the St Andrew’s crews which entered qualified for the various A finals. The first highlight for the weekend was the performance of the St Andrew’s first four, which won Buffalo gold and the Ronald Chilton Trophy for Junior Men first coxed fours, and they also won the Selborne Sprints (500m) in record time.
The St Andrew’s second eight came close to winning the Buffalo event on Saturday, with less than half a second separating the first three places. The first eight had a humdinger of a race, where they put on a stunning final sprint to almost snatch a win from the highly rated SACS team.
The second pair also won a close contest. In the U16 division, the St Andrew’s eight came second to the powerful crew from St Benedict’s, but went on to won the sculls, pairs and the four.
The U15B quad did well by winning their heats, but a breakage put them out of contention in the finals. The DSG first quad finished second in both the regattas, while the first skull won their finals.
Other teams to win both races were the U15A skull and the U15A double, with the U16A skull winning the Selborne sprints and finishing seconds in the Buffalo regatta.
The Buffalo Regatta is the final build up to South African School Championships in Gauteng, where all competing schools were represented so the St Andrew’s crews will spend the next two weeks working hard to improve or maintain their positions.
