Jazz lovers will be pleased to note that one of the most talented Eastern Cape jazz outfits –the John Edwards trio will be performing at the St Andrew’s Drill Hall tomorrow evening.
This recently formed ensemble are not only accomplished and renowned jazz performers but are also actively involved in music education in the Eastern Cape.
Jazz lovers will be pleased to note that one of the most talented Eastern Cape jazz outfits –the John Edwards trio will be performing at the St Andrew’s Drill Hall tomorrow evening.
This recently formed ensemble are not only accomplished and renowned jazz performers but are also actively involved in music education in the Eastern Cape.
Grahamstown was the nucleus for the formation of this jazz trio which features John Edwards on piano, Kingsley Buitendag on bass and Steve Ellis on drums.
The band’s repertoire encapsulates their collective and extensive musical experience with influences including classical music, blues, swing and Latin American and African rhythms.
Several original compositions by the band members will also be featured. Band leader and pianist/composer John Edwards’ music career started in Durban with classical piano studies, followed by a postgraduate degree in jazz performance and composition from the University of KwaZulu-Natal with Darius Brubeck as his supervisor.
He was appointed as a jazz lecturer at Rhodes University in 2005 where he taught until the end
of 2009.
John recently relocated to Port Elizabeth where he teaches at NMMU and will continue to perform regularly in the Eastern Cape region.
Kingsley Buitendag, the band’s bass player, is a multi-instrumentalist who has studied classical and jazz piano and composition at the University of the Free State.
He was selected to perform in the prestigious National Youth Band in 2008 and 2009 which resulted in him performing at the Joy of Jazz festival alongside international giants such as Joshua Redman.
Kingsley moved to Grahamstown in 2009 to work on a masters degree in Music at Rhodes University. Drummer Steve Ellis is a graduate of Rhodes University where he completed a bachelor of Music and a post graduate certificate in Education, he is currently working towards his Masters in Music.
He has been privileged to share the stage with a number of prominent artists such as Nishlyn Ramana, Marc Duby, Rick van Heerden, Melanie Scholtz, Hotep Galeta, Helen Vosloo and Andy Narell.
He is currently employed as a music teacher at St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown, and as a part-time drum kit lecturer at Rhodes University.
