The 2009 year has been a year in which the mohair industry has shown some remarkable character. This is in lieu of the prices achieved on the scheduled mohair sales during 2009, despite the severe economic downturn. The average market indicator for the two seasons, compared to 2008, were as follows:

Seasno 2009 2008
Summer R76.59/kg R72.84/kg
Winter R73.64/kg R60.70/kg

With the exception of the kid segment (first shearing) of the market, prices excelled during the latter half of the year, with fine adults ending off the year 53% higher and strong adults 61% higher than the opening sale of the year.

The average market indicator also increased by 29% from the beginning of the winter season and by 31% from the beginning of the year.

Italy has once again come to the fore as the leading importer from South Africa, followed by China and the UK.

Exports for the eleven months to end November are 6% higher than the corresponding period of 2008, with the increase in exports of kid mohair towards the end of 2009, increasing the hopes of a revival of the kid market during 2010.
