Bathurst’s Tiger Titans gave their teenage coach Ross McCreath the perfect story to tell HRH Prince Philip when he visits Lord’s Cricket Ground next month – by thrashing the posh private school team he captains.
The township teenagers handed the undefeated St Andrew’s College sixth team their first loss of the season
when they raced to 218 for three and then bundled out their better equipped opponents for a paltry 29 runs.
To add insult to injury, the plucky youngsters sent a jittery McCreath – who opened the St Andrew’s batting – back to the pavilion under a gnarled milkwood tree for a golden duck after he was caught out on the very first ball of their innings.
A tightlipped McCreath said: “I have mixed emotions. It is difficult. I want the best for the Titans and I am also captain of my team.”
Although short on game time the Titans showed they wanted the win more than their opponents by throwing themselves at every ball, despite a bumpy outfield littered with thorns and cow dung ‘landmines’. “This is a real test of character,” St Andrew’s coach Jake Madlala admitted as he watched McCreath make his way back to the sidelines
