said Deva Lee, one of the Jiggered editors.
The Live Music Society provided a great range in music from various Eastern Cape bands inside while Jiggered populated the upstairs outdoor area.
The magazine hosted the party to introduce new Rhodes students and Grahamstown community members to the publication.
“The party definitely gave us presence and we sold 60 copies of our publication,” Lee said. Jiggered is an arts and literary magazine which was launched in May 2009.
The magazine collaborators felt that they were fulfilling a gap in the media market by creating a magazine
that provides a platform for artists which other local publications do not offer.
“It really is a unique magazine in that it allows contributors to experiment with graphics, photography,
fine art, journalism and most uniquely, fiction,” Lee said.
One of the three editors, Ella Johnson said: “There is such an artistic vibe at Rhodes but there was no space for people to put their work out there for others to see and read.”
Jiggered was created to do just that. The publication got its name from a contemporary Scottish novel. “Being jiggered means that slightly broken ecstatic feeling that people get when they are on the breaking
point of producing an incredible piece of work,” Johnson said.
“The magazine is meant to have social and political relevance but it is also for people to publish their private thoughts and experiences,” Lee added.
Jiggered is not affiliated to Rhodes and contributions from studentsand the wider Grahamstown community are welcomed. As the excitement of the success of Saturday night’s event fades, the team of 20 Jiggered
members prepare for issue three of the quarterly magazine. Contributions can be sent to jiggeredhouse@gmail.com.
