Residents of Somerset Heights are enraged that an illegal dumping site in the area has been left unattended for weeks.
The dumping site is located along Taunton Drive near Graeme College. A concerned resident, Sharon Miestre, said she has made six phone calls to the municipality but no action has been taken.
She says she has contacted various municipal officials who assured her that the matter would be taken care of but the rubbish is still there. "The municipality promised to erect a ‘no illegal dumping sign’ but it’s still not placed," she said.
iestre says she and her husband have keep a list of the registration numbers of cars that are seen carrying rubbish to the site and that she has handed the list to the municipality but nothing has come of it.
"We have seen some prominent people dumping things there," she added. She also said that she has seen about 10 children playing in the dirty area. She says she is considering hiring a private contractor to clean up the are and then sending the bill to the municipality because the problem has been going on for weeks.
Following numerous complaints about the dump site, the municipality collected the rubbish last week. Head of Department of Environmental Health, Johann Esterhuizen says that the rubbish is collected according to a certain roster and not according to people’s complaints. He also says that no one collects the rubbish besides the municipality.
