A number of Old Andreans (OA) returned to St Andrew’s College over the past weekend for the OA Tide Celebration where they teamed up to face the St Andrew’s 1st cricket side.
The OA side was made up of Peter Amm, Michael Price (an Eastern Province amateur player), Scott Jackson, Mark Ford, Jonnie Mallett, Dave Duncan, Justin Price, Mark Vogel, Peter Louwrens, Hugh Ainslie and Clive Eley.
All the 1st team Grade 12s returned for this encounter as it was the last fixture they would play for a while at St Andrew’s.
The OAs won the toss and elected to bat. St Andrew’s started off well taking a wicket in the second over. A good second wicket partnership between Michael and Justin Price saw the OAs consolidate before the St Andrew’s attack started to make inroads.
Great bowling from Grant Macdonald saw him take four wickets in his ten overs. The bowling was also well backed up by Ryan Dugmore and Justus Luttig who bowled economically to reduce the OAs’ total to 223/9 in their 50 overs. (Michael Price 60, Dave Duncan 55).
After the lunch break, St Andrew’s started poorly, loosing a wicket off the third ball to a soft dismissal. They then lost wickets regularly, and found themselves 97/4 at the drinks break.
They lost their fifth wicket soon after the break and victory looked in favour of the OA side. However, it was a great partnership between Sasha Gunn (55 not out) and Richard O’Mahony (78 not out), which led the schoolboy side to victory, winning with an over and a half to spare and five wickets remaining.
