DJ Sbu, also known as masked kwaito star Mzekezeke had disappointed crowds when he arrived more than two hours late for his show.He stayed for 90 minutes and only performed three numbers. He played out with his hit song Remember When It Rained and wished his fans good night. But, for many of his fans it was not a “good night”. The angry crowd bayed for more.
Leope, tried to leave with the help of his bouncers but was mobbed by a group of fans. According to witnesses one angry fan flung a Smirnoff bottle at him, hitting him on the head. The bleeding DJ was then hurriedly escorted out of the hall and rushed to hospital.
Leope’s manager, Sanele Dlamini denies that Leope was attacked. She said a female fan had “accidentally” hit Leope with a bottle as he was leaving the venue. “What happened was an accident that resulted from too much excitement on the part of the fans,” said Dlamini.
DJ Sbu late
Disgruntled fan, Ntombentsha Tinise said, “Sbu had been chilling at the Protea Hotel while we waited for him at the hall.” She said that she blamed both the crowd and DJ Sbu for what happened, but said that no one deserved to be treated that way.
One of the event organisers admitted that the Masonic hall, where the show was held, was too small for a DJ of Leope’s fame and popularity. The organiser said the venue had been a “last resort” because all the bigger halls had been booked. He said he was worried about the message the incident would send to other DJs who would like to perform in Grahamstown.
The director of the local company that organised the event Siyabulela “DJ Ivy” said Leope’s managers were not happy about what had happened to their artist on his first visit to Grahamstown
