Great places to grab some grub in Grahamstown

Great Places to Grab some grub in Grahamstown

Nachos

While you can find Nachos at Spur, Case de Loco and several other places in town, we recommend you try the Nando’s Nachos. Nando’s is situated in Pepper Grove close to the pharmacy.

Milkshakes

You can never go wrong with a milkshake on a hot day. You’ll find the best milkshakes are the ‘brunch/coffee/lunch’ type places. In high street, you’ll see Red Cafe’s deck before you see the entrance, where you’ll walk up some narrow stairs into the quaint place. Across the road, Delizzia is right next to the blind library and is a great place to grab a milkshake after doing some community engagement next door.

Cocktails

If you’re like me, and like fruit in your drinks, you can stop in at the Pothole & Donkey in High street. You can also head to Frasers for some gin-tails, if your tinder date goes well.

Sushi

I won’t lie to you; the best place to get Sushi around here is probably Port Alfred. Since all our Sushi places closed down in town, there’s been a lack of raw fish in these parts. But if driving 45 minutes to an hour isn’t what you planned to do when you get a salmon rose craving, just pop down to the Spar at B.P or the Pick n Pay at Peppergrove and get a takeaway, made fresh on the day.

I’m taking my partner on a date

Makhanda isn’t necessarily known for its ‘fine dining’ but we do what we can. I highly recommend Harricot’s Deli & Bistro, Brown’s 137 on High Street, and Saint’s- a town favourite.

Library Snack

It’s well known in Makhanda that Spar has the best quick snacks, plus because its 24/7 you can grab a snack on your library break. During the day, its best to run into the Kaif and order a pie, or for a healthier alternative check out the vending machine outside the Post Grad Commons.

Coffee Dates

Whether it’s your crush, your bestie, or your entire third year writing class needing a quick meet over coffee, you are spoiled for choice. Grahamstown has an abundance of coffee places. Theatre Cafe is on campus and is great for chilling out with the arty students, Home Ground Coffee Roasters is always a treat and not too far, just over the road to your left from the drama department. Back at the old Goal across the Albany museum you’ll find my personal favourite, Hand Made coffees.

Fruit & Veg

On a budget: Country Fresh Foods, & the Farmbox. Although Spar and Pick n Pay offers a huge variety of fresh produce, sometimes you just want to feel like you’re at a market.

Great Fish

Already made: Lemon ‘n Spice in Pepper Grove

Make it yourself: If you’ve got a little to spend in time and money, it’s worth grabbing your favourite seafood from Fusion. Hard to find, it’s nestled beside KFC, and corners Mr Price at Peppergrove.

I want to keep partying but I’m hungry and broke, and too lazy to go to Spar

There’s only one solution to that: Mama Pam’s. Where you ask? Right outside the Rat, the delicious smell of caramelized onions and grilled beef sausage will guide you.

Desert and Baked goods.

The Bakery in the Frasers complex is always a good start, but you’ll find that they run out of stuff quickly so get there fast.

Brunch

Too early for lunch, too late for breakfast? You’ll find brunch specials at Revelations in Pepper Grove. Also in Pepper Grove, a South African favourite Mugg & Bean. I mean it’s expensive so probably just Brunch with the parents when they fly into the country.

Curry

House of Curry  in New Street has an array of choices of Roti wraps, Bunny Chows’s and curries. You can not only order food, you can grab some spices top add to that dinner you promised to cook for your housemates.

Home-cooked

Wanting a warm, wholesome meal? Calabash’s slogan is literally ‘taste of Africa’ and they’re not wrong. To find traditional cuisine like lamb pot, dumplings and roast beef, walk into the Graham Hotel and see it to your left.
