A Renaissance of Music & Art
Art, fashion and music are three creative forms that have been significantly embraced within Rhodes University’s campus culture. A place where talents are constantly found breeding cutting-edge masterpieces of creativity and versatile aesthetics.
Although forever on a showcase from as simple as seeing unique campus fits during a library study break to walking the town’s artificial museums, every year it has become mandatory for the culture to meet and share their creativity and visions. One trendsetter that has been upholding the fast paced, high-energy world of contemporary art, is Organic Live.
Established in 2019, Organic Live is an artistic experience that merges art with the nightlife to bring unique experiences in Makhanda. It takes one on journeys around the rich history of the town’s artistic point of view, promoting expressions of the self in the most authentic way. It brings together vast personalities of artists, creatives, electronic to hip hop music lovers and fashion enthusiasts who are all eager to experience the latest trends and styles.
From a 2022 avant-garde showcase of fashion, this year’s Organic live was hosted coinciding one of Rhodes University’s top photographers, visionary and creative director of Gemini Vision ZA, Lithemba Nziweni. Composed of photography, short films and part one of a documentary, Lithemba decided to make Hairitage a lifelong project from 2022 as an ongoing process of learning, finding and connecting to one’s identity. Attendees were met with a vast nature of different types of hair being showcased for their textures, their intricacies and their messages.
Part two of Hiaritage’s documentary was also the night’s spectacle as an exhibition which was then followed by some of Rhodes campus’ very own upcoming musicians and performers. Along with this night life rush, the event embodied the spirit of urban culture that saw the incorporated elements of streetwear, sportswear and high fashion. Organic Live succeeded in creating a dynamic atmosphere where style and creativity converged.
